Starting this blog is like starting a gardening project. I've done a lot of staring into space, thinking about where to begin.
So I'll start with a picture:
Not terribly exciting, I know. But this picture was the inspiration for my most recent gardening / landscaping project, as well as for this blog.
I unearthed sunken concrete chunks that -as a whole- comprised a driveway in the 70s (thanks to my neighbor for the history lesson), but required some attention in their current function as pavers in a garden path. This is what I did...
The path is refreshed, but the surrounding beds are a bit of an overgrown hodgepodge. My vision entails irises, ferns, bleeding hearts, and some sweet woodruff, none of which are currently in the beds. What to do with the plants that are there? Well, I feel dysfunctionally guilty about getting rid of any plants. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. So I had this idea for facilitating a vibrant gardening community - the Seattle Plant Exchange.
In addition to addressing dysfunctional guilt, the SPX is a means for discussing and discovering everything related to Seattle-area horticulture. I am in the process of creating a Meetup Group to organize meetings, so members can get together in groups or coordinate plant swaps between individuals. I'm also developing some guidelines for communicating and scheduling swaps.
This will just take on a life of its own, I suspect and hope.
While it does, I am in need of some ferns, white bleeding hearts, and sweet woodruff. I will post again soon regarding plants I have available to swap. First I have to take some photos.
Happy gardening,
Hillary
